A New Event for Gujrat's Tent-Pegging Tradition

Neza bazi — tent pegging — has been part of Punjab's culture for generations. It is a sport built on speed, skill, and the bond between rider and horse. On 3rd October 2026, that tradition returns to Gujrat, as Ittefaq Neza Baaz Club Gujrat, under the Neza Bazi Union District Gujrat, launches the Sultan e Gujrat Championship — a competition for up to 400 riders, for one of the district's top titles.

Organized by an Experienced Club

Sultan e Gujrat is not a first event for its organizer. Ittefaq Neza Baaz Club Gujrat has organized events in the district for years — club records show 19 events in 2022, 11 in 2023, and 15 in 2024, including several floodlit matches, in towns such as Ko Aankh, Chak Sikandar, Hajiwala, Bunyan, Sanghar, Bhattian, Mekiyana, Fatehpur, and Gharhi Bhawal, and even Bhimber in Azad Kashmir. That is more than 45 events in three years — real experience behind this new championship.

Led by President Irfan Baig Koankh

The championship is organized by Irfan Baig Koankh, President of Ittefaq Neza Baaz Club Gujrat. Under his leadership, the club has grown into one of the most active clubs in the district, known for discipline, clear rules, and consistency. The same standards will apply to Sultan e Gujrat.

Rules Riders Should Know

The match will follow the official rules of the Neza Bazi Union District Gujrat, and the jury's decision will be final. Some of the rules for the day:

• Riders from District Gujrat are welcome to join. Guest teams from other districts are also welcome.
• Professional riders may not take part.
• No weapons, drugs, or display of arms are allowed on the ground.
• Every peg must be removed cleanly, without injury to horse or rider.
• Pillion riders and general riders will use separate tracks.
• Any unfair team change, false request, or attempt to change the result will lead to disqualification.
• Complaints must be submitted in writing to the jury.
• The match will pause for Azaan and prayer.
• Prizes will not be wrapped in plastic, and good food will be given to participants at no extra cost.

Well-Organized Arrangements

As in the club's past events, Sultan e Gujrat will have full arrangements on the ground: government permission and a certified jury, a proper sound system and announcer, live coverage and photography, seating for cup, shield, and referee, tent and stage service, water for horses and spectators, safe parking, an ambulance and medical staff, and a trained ground team to manage the route and place the pegs. The track will follow official rules, including peg spacing and height, so the competition is fair for every rider.
